The Official Launch of the Report on “The Remapping and Analysis of Human Rights and Peace Education in ASEAN/Southeast Asia” and The Regional Workshop on Converging for Human Rights and Peace Education: Maximizing Prospects in ASEAN/Southeast Asia (17-18 October 2019) was organized by the Strengthening Human Rights and Peace Research/Education in ASEAN/Southeast Asia Programme (SHAPE-SEA) and the ASEAN University Network-Human Rights Education Theme (AUN-HRE), at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Amara Ponsapitch, Chair of ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), Dr. Mi Mi Gyi, on behalf of Chair of Senior Officials’ Meetings on Education (SOM-ED), H.E. Marina Berg, Ambassador of Sweden to ASEAN, Ms. Julie Chen, Director, ASEAN Affairs, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), H.E. Vegard Kaale, Ambassodor, Embassy of Norway to ASEAN in Jakarta and Dr. Sriprapha Petcharamesree, Programme, Chair of SHAPE-SEA Programme and Convener of AUN-HRE opened the meeting by welcoming all the participants and sharing the objectives of the meeting.
The two-day event was attended by 85 representatives from members of AUN-HRE, SEAHRN, ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Education (SOM-ED), ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (AIPR), Human Rights and Peace Academics, Students, ASEAN Secretariat Staff and representatives of relevant sectoral bodies including representatives from Embassies.Main objective of the Workshop is to update and take stock of existing study programs/ courses on human rights, peace and conflict being carried out by various higher education institutions in Southeast Asia and to discuss a strategic planning on ways and means to mainstream human rights and peace through education and applied research. The recommendations from the workshop focusing on six areas: Developing a Regional Collaborative Graduate Program on Human Rights and/or Peace in ASEAN/Southeast Asia, Developing courses on Human Rights and Peace in ASEAN/Southeast Asia, Developing Teaching Resources, Capacity Building, Protection of Academic and Student Engagement.The events supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida),and the ASEAN-USAID Partnership for Regional Optimization within the Political-Security and Social-Cultural Communities (ASEAN-US PROSPECT).
